Standard Opening Hours

The Uffizi Gallery keeps the same schedule for most of the year:

Open: Tuesday through Sunday, 8:15 AM to 6:30 PM Last entry: 5:30 PM (one hour before closing) Closed: Every Monday

These hours have been consistent for several years and are unlikely to change in 2026. The gallery opens at 8:15 AM sharp — if you have the first time slot, be at Door 1 by 8:00 AM. Security takes a few minutes, so the first visitors typically enter the galleries by 8:20-8:25 AM.

The last entry at 5:30 PM is strictly enforced. If you arrive at 5:35, you will not get in. Plan to arrive by 5:15 PM at the latest to account for the security queue. That said, arriving at 5:30 PM only gives you one hour in the gallery — not enough for a thorough visit. I'd recommend arriving by 4:00-4:30 PM for a satisfying late-afternoon visit.

Closed Days and Holidays

Every Monday: The Uffizi is closed every Monday without exception. This applies year-round, including holiday Mondays. If your only free day in Florence falls on a Monday, plan accordingly — visit the Accademia (also closed Mondays), Palazzo Vecchio (open Mondays), or explore the Oltrarno neighborhood instead.

Actually, let me correct that — both the Uffizi and Accademia are closed on Mondays. If Monday is your only day, good alternatives include: - Palazzo Vecchio (open daily) - Florence Cathedral / Duomo complex (open daily) - Boboli Gardens (open daily except some Mondays — check the schedule) - The Oltrarno neighborhood, Ponte Vecchio, and Piazzale Michelangelo (free, always accessible)

Holiday closures in 2026: - January 1 (New Year's Day) — Closed - December 25 (Christmas Day) — Closed - May 1 (Labour Day) — Closed

Open on most holidays: The Uffizi is open on Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, August 15 (Ferragosto), and most other Italian holidays. These tend to be busy days — book well in advance.

First Sunday of the month: The gallery is open and free. Expect extreme crowds.

Late-Night Openings

During summer months (typically June through September), the Uffizi sometimes offers extended evening hours — staying open until 10:00 PM on selected nights, usually Tuesdays. These late-night openings are wonderful: the summer heat has cooled, the crowds have thinned, and the gallery has a completely different atmosphere with evening light streaming through the Arno-side windows.

Important: Late-night openings are not guaranteed every year and dates vary. They're typically announced in late spring. Check the official Uffizi website (uffizi.it) closer to your visit for confirmed dates.

Why I recommend evening visits: If you can catch a late-night opening, it's one of the best Uffizi experiences available. The galleries are significantly less crowded than during the day. The light is different — warmer, more atmospheric. And there's something magical about walking through Renaissance art as the sun sets over the Arno.

How to book: Late-night tickets are sold the same way as regular tickets — online or at the ticket office. Evening slots can sell out quickly once announced, so book promptly. The price is the same as standard entry.

Best Time to Arrive

Based on years of guiding visitors through the Uffizi, here are the best and worst arrival times:

8:15 AM (Opening) — THE BEST: If you're willing to wake up early, the first 90 minutes of the Uffizi are extraordinary. You'll share Botticelli Hall with a handful of other visitors instead of hundreds. The light through the east-facing windows is beautiful. Go straight to the galleries and follow them in order.

4:00-4:30 PM — Second Best: Day-trip groups typically leave Florence by 3 PM. The gallery calms down noticeably in the late afternoon. Afternoon light through the Arno-side windows is gorgeous. You'll have about 2-2.5 hours until closing — enough for the highlights.

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM — WORST: Peak hours. Every tour group, school trip, and cruise ship excursion arrives during this window. Botticelli Hall feels like a rush-hour train platform. If this is your only option, start with the less popular rooms (35-90) and circle back to the early rooms after 2 PM.

My recommendation: If you're visiting Florence for more than one day, visit the Uffizi first thing in the morning. Use the rest of the day for outdoor activities, food, and neighborhoods. If you only have one day, the Uffizi at 8:15 AM followed by the Accademia in the early afternoon is the ideal combination.

How Long Should You Spend at the Uffizi?

This is one of the most common questions I get. The answer depends on your interest level:

Highlights only (2 hours): Enough to see the essential rooms — Botticelli Hall, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, and Caravaggio. You'll move at a brisk pace but hit all the major works. This is fine for visitors with limited time or moderate art interest.

Thorough visit (3-4 hours): Enough to see most rooms at a comfortable pace, spend time with paintings that interest you, visit the panoramic terrace, and take a coffee break at the rooftop cafe. This is what I recommend for most visitors.

Art lover's visit (4-6 hours): For serious art enthusiasts who want to study individual paintings, read all the room descriptions, explore the recently opened ground-floor galleries, and sit quietly with their favorite works. Bring water and plan a break.

Museum fatigue is real. After 2-3 hours of concentrated looking, most people's ability to absorb new information drops sharply. If you feel it setting in, take a break at the terrace cafe (great views of the Palazzo Vecchio and the hills beyond Florence), then return refreshed.

The panoramic terrace: Don't miss it. Located on the top floor near the cafe, it offers stunning views of Florence — the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and the surrounding hills. It's a perfect mid-visit break point.

Seasonal Variations

The Uffizi's official hours don't change by season, but your experience varies dramatically:

Summer (June-August): The gallery can feel hot, especially in upper-floor rooms without strong air conditioning. Arrive early to beat both crowds and heat. Check for evening openings. Hydrate — bring a water bottle (allowed inside). The long daylight hours mean you can visit the Uffizi in the morning and still have a full day of Florence ahead of you.

Autumn (September-November): Crowds thin after mid-September. October is particularly pleasant — comfortable temperatures, manageable crowds, and autumn light through the gallery windows. November brings low-season pricing and very quiet galleries.

Winter (December-February): The quietest months. You may have entire rooms to yourself on a Tuesday or Wednesday. The downside: shorter daylight hours mean late-afternoon visits happen in fading light. The gallery is well-lit artificially, but morning visits offer better natural light. December has a festive atmosphere in Florence, but the gallery closes December 25.

Spring (March-May): Beautiful weather draws crowds. Easter week is particularly busy. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for spring weekends. May is busy due to the holiday on May 1 (gallery closed) and warm weather. Morning visits are essential in spring.
